Mock Interviews
Purpose:
For many students, especially first-generation-in-college and low-income students, that first job interview as well as college interviews can be intimidating. That’s why we provide the opportunity for students to meet with a kind, encouraging, knowledgeable adult who can provide insight into the interviewing process and conduct mock interviews.
Activity:
Help students enhance their interviewing skills and gain confidence in a professional setting. This practical experience will be invaluable for students as they prepare to enter the workforce.
This opportunity is meant to be done in a series with a resume-writing workshop. Students will complete the resume writing workshop and then come back the following week with their new resumes and conduct mock interviews.
Mock Interview Agenda:
- Interview the student.
- Evaluate the interview based on a preset list of criteria. (Amy to provide)
- Provide feedback for the students.
- Allow students to process feedback and ask questions.

Career Chats and Lunch-and-Learns
Purpose:
Host career chats for students so that they can learn about careers and how to get started preparing for them.
Activity:
We are always looking for individuals who own businesses or thrive in their careers to showcase their profession to students, helping them begin to plan for life after high school. As a presenter, you will share the education and preparation necessary for the career along with the process to land the job and possible advancements in the career field. We also encourage you to share the successes and pitfalls you experienced throughout your journey. Students will be able to ask questions related to your presentation and information shared.
Sample Schedule:
- Tell the student about your career experiences.
- Describe a workday in that job and describe your work cycle.
- Engage your audience:
- Tell your story interactively.
- Provide handouts.
- Provide examples.
- Speak to the educational requirements.

Lunch-and-Learn Timing

Career Fairs
Purpose: Each year, our Student Success Coaches plan college and career fairs from start to finish. This process involves securing a date and time for the event in coordination with colleges, universities, businesses, career and industry professionals, and area high schools. It also involves making connections with college and career representatives as well as setting up the event with tables, chairs, and name signs for representatives. You can directly assist the Student Success Coach, or, if you’re a business owner, you can be part of the fair.
Keys to a Successful Event:
- Company representatives:
- We kindly ask you to designate representatives from your company to interact with students during the career fair. These representatives will serve as ambassadors of your company, sharing information about your organization and the career paths it offers.
- Supplemental materials:
- Please consider bringing brochures, flyers, or any other relevant materials that provide an overview of your company and the opportunities available for students. These materials will serve as valuable resources for students to take away and explore further.
- Collateral to provide:
- During the career fair, you may have the chance to distribute swag items or branded merchandise that will leave a lasting impression on the students. This can include pens, notepads, or other promotional items.
- Engaging booth setup:
- To create a memorable experience for the students, we encourage you to design an engaging booth setup. Interactive displays, multimedia presentations, or hands-on activities can capture the students’ attention and spark their interest in your company.
- Internship and job opportunities:
- If your company offers internships or part-time or full-time job opportunities, we encourage you to share these openings with students. You can provide physical job postings at your booth or share access to online portals where students can apply.
- Sponsorship opportunities:
- Your company can sponsor breakfast or lunch.
- You can do table sponsorship. High school tables are few and far between.
- Sponsors’ names will be on the flyer.
School’s Role
- Reserve the gymnasium for the night before and day of the event.
- Provide directions from the parking lot to the event.
- Set up chairs and tables.
- Host an event with Oak Park in the spring. Recruit: Publix, Rye & Nyes, and Goodwill.
