“Build bridges, not walls.” – Suzy Kassem, writer, poet, philosopher, and artist
Luka Perry epitomizes this quote, as the Riverview High School senior on the Education Foundation of Sarasota County board. Beginning her second/final year, she also mentors her successor, junior-board member Aaron Nielson, who’s in two school clubs with her.
Having joined the board this summer, Aaron says, “Before meeting face-to-face, Luka began supporting me by sending texts to guide me through the complicated functions of the organization. She also strives to engage others during our high-school’s Model United Nations club.”
Echoing others, Teacher Representative Kari Johnson (kindergarten teacher at Fruitville Elementary for 17 years; now program specialist for the Sarasota Elementary Curriculum Department and fellow Education Foundation Board Member) says:
“Luka’s proactive approach and enthusiasm help bridge gaps between students and educators, advancing mutual respect and understanding. She fosters the Education Foundation’s mission to enhance student potential, promote excellence in teaching, and inspire innovation in education.”
Kari touts Luka’s ability to ask board members insightful questions representing her peers’ concerns and ideas, ensuring they are addressed.
According to Kari, “Luka’s empathy and commitment to understanding student needs help her advocate effectively for positive change by engaging and informing other board members. Her enthusiasm has energized our efforts.”
Luka bridges gaps between groups, contributing to her own and student self-confidence while championing the Education Foundation.
SANDY CHASE: Why did you want to be a Foundation board member?
LUKA PERRY: My counselor, Mrs. Beach, encouraged me to apply as the student board member. I was familiar with the nonprofit because it ran the Riverview’s Student Success Center previously. Education Foundation posters advertising the importance of their aid and guidance for all students impressed me. After more research, I discovered that I was aligned with the organization’s student-centered mission.
SANDY: Describe the selection process.
LUKA: I completed an online application, answering questions about my academic standing, leadership, interests, and proposed contributions to the board. The Education Foundation’s President Jennifer Vigne, and Amber Bayliss, a past student board member, interviewed me.
I’m grateful for being chosen for this professional, inspiring educational organization, where I continue to learn so much.
SANDY: What has been your experience with the Education Foundation?
LUKA: I’ve seen how the organization encourages building connections between mentors/educators and students, guiding them to future success and creating a support system lasting beyond graduation. Mentorship success stories highlight how students have gone from seemingly hopeless situations to achieving their academic and future goals.
SANDY: What are your academic and career aspirations?
LUKA: I haven’t chosen a major yet. My dream job is working in communications for an organization like NASA, having completed journalism and astronomy electives. I’m also considering an economics degree, after completing economics courses through the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. And I’ve considered a career in teaching, public health, and philanthropy, having seen the Education Foundation’s accomplishments and mentoring Aaron, an exceptional peer.
SANDY: Which school is your choice for post-secondary education?
LUKA: I’m amidst researching colleges, considering University of Florida, Florida State University, and University of South Florida. More of a reach are Davidson College (NC), Emory (GA), and Bowdoin (ME).
SANDY: How has the Education Foundation helped you realize some of those goals?
LUKA: I’ve taken advantage of the nonprofit’s resources, such as the resume and recommendation letter templates (edfoundationsrq.org). I also plan to take advantage of FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshops, as I navigate the college-application process.
I’m more confident in talking with adults. I continue practicing speaking skills, which serve me at school and, hopefully, in my career. A balance exists between understanding the expectations that come with holding such a powerful leadership position and feeling comfortable in voicing my opinions.
Without board members’ guidance, I wouldn’t have learned networking skills that enabled me to make some of my most important connections. And I’m gaining insight into finances: a great introduction into the professional world.
As a board member I’ve learned how to better manage my time: balancing my academics with (1) attending board meetings and Education Foundation events, such as open house, Ignite Education Teacher of the Year Celebration, and Teacher Appreciation Week; (2) volunteering at Boys and Girls Club and Pines of Sarasota; (3) tutoring; and (4) interning at Professional Benefits Inc., an insurance company specializing in executive benefits.
Time management will become more crucial, as I delve into the college-application process.
SANDY: As a board member, what are your goals for the Education Foundation?
LUKA: Goals include (1) improving resources and ensuring that all students are aware of them; (2) exploring strategies to attract and retain great teachers for Sarasota County Schools amidst a shortage; and (3) ensuring the organization continues to include a student-centered voice in decision making, giving us a voice at the table.
SANDY: How do your goals mesh with the Education Foundation’s mission?
LUKA: I advocate for the power of education, excited that my participation has taught me to feel more comfortable getting involved in future nonprofit boards.
SANDY: What message do you have for classmates and others who are interested in boosting their academics?
LUKA: Get involved! Volunteer for Sarasota’s numerous nonprofits, offering you professional experience. This rewarding work is one of the best resume boosters because colleges will see the difference you make in the community.
LUKA: The Education Foundation’s mentorship program is the best tool for success. You build trust with your mentor while gaining invaluable advice. Take advantage of this program to improve all facets of your life.
SANDY: What message do you have for prospective volunteers?
LUKA: Any time spent working with this organization is valuable. Because of you, students and teachers benefit. Volunteering with the Education Foundation is flexible: whatever time you can give is appreciated. It’s win-win: you’ll feel valued while rewarded by giving back to your community.
