North Port High School STRIVE Recipients
Jackie Thame | At an early age, life taught Jackie the value of being reliable and present. For much of their lives, Jackie, her twin Joel (also a STRIVE student), and their older brother lived with their grandparents, who took legal guardianship of the children. Jackie was extremely close to her supportive grandparents, and she felt their pride when she excelled in school and at track and field events where she threw discus, placing first in the district last year. In her junior year, with the pandemic ongoing, Jackie chose remote classes so she could help her grandmother and spend as much time as possible with her beloved grandfather, whose cancer was rapidly worsening. After his death last spring, Jackie returned to in-person classes, carrying an enormous sad weight. Despite that, she maintained her grades–she has a 4.6 GPA—and credits a teacher and good friends who encouraged her to talk about her grief. Jackie has been accepted at several universities and plans to go into the medical field, most likely research and development of new medicines.
Advice to entering freshmen: Don’t get distracted by high school drama. Instead, make your plan, do your work, and focus on the bigger picture.
