Sarasota student: From personal loss to creating tangible solutions for others

For Riverview High School graduating senior Ryan Hicks, Class of 2020, the common thread that runs through diverse fields that interest him is that they all would prepare him for a career doing something tangible that directly benefits others.

Ryan’s passion for researching, designing and delivering custom solutions to problems was ignited when he struggled to overcome the shock of severe personal losses.

Middle school through freshman years were tough for Ryan. He was trying to cope with a close family friend’s death when Ryan’s father died suddenly from a heart attack after training strenuously to qualify to accompany Ryan’s Boy Scout troop to Canada on a water adventure trip.

Just four days before his father’s death, Ryan’s mother had been diagnosed with cancer and was scheduled for surgery. Continue reading.
