My dad’s career took him away from home for long stretches when I was a little girl, and school became my reliable constant. I knew that I’d see my teacher every day, and she would greet me with a kind smile and support. Her consistently positive presence encouraged me and helped me progress while Dad was away.
In choosing my own career path, I decided that I wanted to be that light for children.
That’s not in my job description, of course. My official job is to teach 5- and 6-year-olds how to read, master other basic content and develop socially and emotionally to prepare them for first grade.
