The Arts

“Arts are an essential element of a complete education — helping students become creative, engaged learners prepared to lead successful lives.” - Brian Hersh, Any Given Child Sarasota

Why the arts? Art is education. Countless research studies have shown that students participating in the arts show gains in both academic achievement and social and behavioral skills. This link to increased math, literacy, cognitive and communication skills has been demonstrated year after year by Sarasota County students impacted by the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and community-supported initiatives. For the 12th consecutive year, Sarasota County Schools has been rated an “A” district, and has been ranked as one of the top five school districts in the state. In 2014, Sarasota County became one of a handful of communities selected to participate in the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child initiative, expanding access to the arts for all students.

For over 25 years, the Education Foundation of Sarasota County has supported arts curriculum through creative and engaging classroom experiences and field trips to local museums and theaters. In 2011, in partnership with The Patterson Foundation, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Arts & Cultural Alliance, and numerous community arts organizations, EdExploreSRQ was created to connect teachers and students with hands on learning opportunities. Because of your support, students have the opportunity to learn about fractions with dancers, physics at the circus, and history at the museum.

“The Education Foundation of Sarasota County continues to be a staunch supporter of our students’ learning and the arts programs at our school. Its annual funding of the Sarasota County Schools’ Spring Art Show allows over 3,000 students to have artwork exhibited in professional gallery spaces and gives our entire community the chance to see the continuum of their artistic talents on display.” Angela Hartvigsen, Sarasota County Schools Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist
